Your Inner European is French!

Smart and sophisticated.
You have the best of everything - at least, *you* think so.

Keep on doing what you're doing, and you'll reach your goals.

You Are 36% Sociopath

From time to time, you may be a bit troubled and a bit too charming for your own good.
It's likely that you're not a sociopath... just quite smart and a bit out of the mainstream!
You're a Wild Drunk

You can get enough drink. Seriously, you'll just go puke and start pounding them back again!

You Are a Boston Creme Donut

You have a tough exterior. No one wants to mess with you.

Misunderstood as a primal monster, you're a true hedonist with a huge sweet tooth.

You are usually feeling: Hungry. Cookies are preferred, but you'll eat anything if cookies aren't around.

You are famous for: Your slightly crazy eyes and usual way of speaking

How you life your life: In the moment. "Me want COOKIE!"

alpha, beta, gamma, omega

Today I joined a conversation with Annie, Marlene, and Joyce about shy girls who attract guys and what type of guys get attracted to shy girls and why. This then degenerated into an analysis of personality types, the Alpha (the bossy asshole), Beta (the best friend), Gamma (mix of Alpha and Beta), and Omega (the one everyone kicks around). After Helen joined the conversation, it degenerated further into us sharing stories about asshole Alphas we've ever worked with in the lab and how you they'll be complete bastards until you do something that makes them respect you.

I can think of a few people who fit these personality types - CM as the Alpha and BFF as the Omega...I'm pretty sure I'd be a Gamma...although I must confess I may sometimes be a bit alpha-ish *wince*.

Tax time

I NEED my tax return. Seriously. But I find filling in that tax form so stressful. I wish I could afford an accountant to do it for me. Instead I have to just pick the brains of my accountant friends.

Sorry dudes.

NO! NO! NO!!!!!

I'm sure I've written at some point in time how much I love YouTube. If I haven't, it must be one of the imaginary posts I wrote in my head, then forgot to post. Anyway, I'm sure I would have spoken about it in person about how great a website it is. You can watch all kinds of cool videos like Dave Chapelle's parody of R Kelly or various classic Sesame St. clips.

Well now someone wants to sue YouTube for copyright infringement. While I can kinda see where these people are coming from (I reckon most of what I watch there isn't cleared), millions of people will lose a wonderful source of entertainment! Geeks will lose an outlet for expressing their creativity - who hasn't watched The Narutrix and wondered at the sheer creativity of it?!

Seriously, shutting the site down...don't do it. I would be heartbroken.

Madame La Presidente

I am now the President of the Postgraduate Students Of Anatomy Society. Technically, this position is not official because we didn't hold an AGM and I wasn't voted. But since I'm reviving it and doing the liaising with the Head of Dept and the Moneyman...yeah.

Let my reign of prosperity and benevolence begin!
Let's hope it doesn't degenerate into a reign of poverty and terror - although that might be a bit fun.

(There was a topic I wanted to cover, but I couldn't remember it so I just wrote this entry instead.)

Psychic vibes?

I used to enjoy sectioning. I'm sure I talked about the joys of using the microtome last year. This year I'm using a cryostat to section liquid-nitrogen frozen tissue. It's not as fun as paraffin sectioning. For one, paraffin sectioning can be completed quite quickly if you can *create* ribbons of sections. You can't do that with the cryostat, thus the process is a lot longer. And colder. And tedious.

I had a difficult day on the cryostat today (man, that name sure is fitting!). I won't go into the details - lets just say that when I got back to toshi, I immediately changed my msn suffix to *I need a drink. Many drinks.* Something that didn't make the task easier was to have ppl phone me! For some reason, people always seem to phone me while I'm all gowned and gloved up and sectioning! They don't phone when I'm on the microscope or doing general lab stuff. I assume I must be putting out psychic waves of pain to my nearest and dearest. Today I got two equally pointless calls whose sole purpose was to make me more frustrated.

Firstly my cousin phoned me to ask where I got my haircut in boxy. It seems she was randomly there and wanted to check the place out. Right. And then Poosey, my sister, rang me to replicate one of Dave Chapelle's A Day in the Life of Lil' Jon routines. SHE JUST RANG TO SAY *WHAT?!?!* down the phone!!!

Me so angry after that!!!!

Peace out!

How to blog

I confess - there have been times when I've bitched at my sis for her lack of updates. There have also been comments that people don't understand how I can do a phd and yet I still seem to post updates fairly regularly. So I shall confess to how it is done.

The secret is to integrate blogging into random things that you are doing in order to alleviate boredom. For example, this post is being written while I'm completing some microscopy on a machine that's hooked up to a computer. I'm booked on this microscope for a 3-hour block. I'm not going to be staring down the objective for the entire time - hell no! So during those times when the microscope & compy are doing their automated stuff, I take the opportunity to prattle on.

There's another 2 hours left of my booking - it's possible that this may be a multi-post day. *sigh*

This is what I do when there's nothing on tv and the internet goes down...

Presented here is the Pontillist masterpiece, Un dimanche après-midi à l'Ile de la Grande Jatte (Sunday afternoon on the island of the Grande Jatte) by Georges Seurat.
And now, here I present it in the jigsaw, Simpsonised format.
It was trickier than I expected and completed in about two days.

Stories from the Salon

There's a hair salon in Boxy that's run by Korean people - they always cut my hair nice, but I always walk out with a hairstyle different from what I describe. I don't know why that is. Maybe it's cos the people who work there don't speak english and I don't speak korean. Anyway, for $30 wash, cut & style, I can't complain that much.

But when I got my hair cut yesterday....I walked out a lot different.
I've suddenly found my inner Korean girl. Nevermind that I don't have a stitch of korean in me. With this haircut, I had to take photos of myself in my best HK/Korean model pose!
(Hi Amandine and Pooky!)

Contemporary Art and Why I Hate It

I've been thinking about this topic for quite a while....like about 2 years since I saw Matthew Barney's The Cremaster Cycle, and I think I've come to a conclusion.

I hate Contemporary art.

(Actually, a more accurate comment might be *I hate Modern art* but since there is some Modern art that I do like, that's not quite it either.)

The era of Modern Art arguably began during the 1850s when things like human rights, the Industrial Revolution, science etc., altered the perception of the individual in society. Following this, where art and literature would previously be a result of the whims of the person commissioning the piece (e.g. the Church, Rulers), into depictions of social awareness, starting the era of Modern Art with the Realist movement. Successive movements (Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Futurism, whatever) develop out of contemporary philosophy, society, politics etc. But then after WWII...I hate most of the stuff that comes along. I mean sure, there's Pop Art that everyone loves, but that's because it developed out of using mass produced/popular images as art.

I like art that tells me a story, preferably in a non-pretentious way. I hate stuff like Performance Art. I still remember a lecture where we were told about some artist whose *art* was to take drugs, have himself nailed to a VW Beetle, be driven around while nailed to it, then have the nails extracted and sell them to collectors - all in the name of questioning religion, mass production and consumption. No it isn't. That's self-mutilation in the name of publicity.

And The Cremaster Cycle. It's supposedly an avant garde film commenting on life, death, sex, biology, mythology...best viewed one after the other. No it isn't. Its seven hours of my life completely wasted and never to return. It has everything that's wrong with Contemp Art - prosthetics, ambiguous genitalia, blood, potatoes, pointless tap-dancing, and lots of melted vaseline. Okay, maybe you could somehow figure out that its about life, death, whatever...but as far as I care, it's just self-indulgent crappy crappy crap.

Federer d. Nadal 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3

Italy on penalties (1-1 after extra time)

Far out. I need to sleep.

Zidane!?!

WHAT THE HELL MADE YOU THINK YOU COULD HEADBUTT SOMEONE IN THE GUT!??!?!

It was supposed to be your last international...to go out like that...*sigh*

Wimbledon and World Cup Final

Looks like I wont be sleeping tonight!!!

The great thing about laptops is that my sister and I can lie in beanbags next to each other, in front of the tv watching the tennis. I love watching tennis. It stresses me out incredibly but its so rewarding.I love the way the shirt lifts and you can see the transverse abdominus. Right now the score is two sets for Federer...the third is on serve.

Do-it-yourself surgery

I dunno about you, but I SURE AS HELL would not want to be doing surgery on myself unless its battlefield surgery and I need to dig shrapnel out of my leg. But it seems not everyone is as cautious as me.

Some guy in the US has developed Lasik Eye surgery that you can do yourself at home.

I repeat: you can now operate on your own eyes at home.

I'm really hoping this is a joke website, because I don't know about you, but when I read the four easy steps, it sure looks like a joke! My sister (an optometrist) said that a colleague of hers was sent the site by a patient asking if this was a safe procedure because a friend of the patient had purchased a kit.

I wonder what's next? Home dentistry?

heh

Time for some data!

It feels like it's been a while since I posted any data up here. Even though I've started doing crazy stuff like coming in at 8am to start work...I feel like my productivity has reached an all-time low. I think I'm also annoyed by the fact that I still haven't managed to perfect any of my techniques yet. I mean, I suppose they work, but they could work a helluva lot better for my liking.

Anyway, enough whining! To the right here we have a photo at 400x mag (oil) of a retina showing GFAP+ astrocytes in the (green) in the nerve fibre layer wrapped around blood vessel (red/yellow). Although I'm not particularly enamoured of this photo because the yellow indicates that something may have gone wrong with the colours, I do like how the shape of the cell lining the blood vessel (pericyte) comes up clearly - the little round thing is where the nucleus would be if I threw a nuclear stain on. But this is like taking a whole salami and just cutting it out to see where the fat is.

This (very bad) photo on the left is a photo of what the whole salami would look like if we could make it kinda transparent! This is a whole mounted retina with the blood vessel (green) surrounded by individual astrocytes (red). Ugh, this photo is sooo bad, I'm kinda disgusted at my inability to have made this experiment and the photography better *sigh*. Next time, I better make sure I mount the retina the right way up - I put it on the slide upside-down so when I took the photo, I had to focus through all the stupid layers of the retina! Add to that the fact that the retina I was using kind fell apart during the exp...I suppose I should be happy that I managed to get something like this at all.

Immaculate condition
Always garaged, hardly driven as owner works interstate.
12 months rego!

I know the owner personally and I can say for sure that the car is in immaculate condition - he loves it more than he loves his gf.
(Hell, I'd probably drive the car if I weren't so chickenshit behind the wheel).

Monica Bellucci

A few weeks ago, Mr T (for those who know him) and I had an argument about whether a girl was hot or not. I still stand by my assessment that the girl he thought was hot, Dawn Yang, looks like a freaking alien from all the surgery she's had. This argument was followed by a conversation whereby he attempted to gauge my *taste* in women by asking me who I'd do if I went that way. I automatically rolled out the usual suspects of Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie, but he said they as options were too obvious and therefore I have no taste in women.

Well, now I nominate Monica Bellucci. What's not to love about her? Actor, model, wife of Vincent Cassel, former law student at the University of Perugia, fluent in three languages...but what I love best about her is that she's not one of those stick-insects from LA or one of those girls with her head stuck in HK-model pose (Amandine, you know what I mean!). I especially liked the way she used a fan to kill the yucky girl in Brotherhood of the Wolf (hmmm...now there's a movie I should review!).

In non-related news, waste some hours of your life at paperdollheaven - dress up celebrity paper dolls!

Gosh!

There's so much big sport on right now! How can I choose between staying up and watching Wimbledon like I usually do or waking early to watch the World Cup?! *sniff*

Adelaide photos

So what is there to do in Adelaide? Well apart from the obligatory wine tour, I did the following...
I visited a bar in Rundle St. called *fumo blue*. Fans of the anime Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu! would understand why I found it so hilarious that I had to take a photo of myself with the sign in this pose. The cocktails there weren't bad - I've had better but I suppose they could have been worse.

There were also a bunch of bronze pigs in Rundle Mall that we had to pretend we were riding...couldn't help ourselves!

Weekend roundup

Well if there's one way to describe this weekend as it draws to an end, the word would be *eventful*.

The fun and games started on Friday where we began at lunch to celebrate Kirsty's leaving of the dept to move to Physiology. This of course meant that our weekly celebratory booze-up took on a more frenetic tone as we farewelled one of the chief departmental mischief makers. And what a celebration! Some ppl who didn't normally come out were gotten appropriately pissed and we discovered many funny facts - Annie's a biter when she gets drunk!!! But that wasn't the best bit. One laments the loss of old-fashioned courting behaviour in these modern times - but someone proved us wrong as a waiter came over to our table saying that someone we didnt know at the bar had purchased a drink for one of the gals on our table (not me). WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!! I'm quite eager to see how this pans out as the gal in question is lovely and I broke my rule of not giving numeral scores to guys - he's a H2A in my opinion!

The second one...I agreed to go to an *Asian* night at Blvd. I must admit, there is some fun in getting slutted up and wearing a full face of make up but....Oh. My. God. First of all, despite rocking up at 11pm there was a massive queue outside, and one eyeful of those 12 year old skanks and gangstas told me quite a bit about the kind of crowd would be present inside. Secondly, I had to pay to get in and enjoy the company of said gangstas and skanks! Like, wtf?! And then, I don't know in which world this kind of behaviour is considered acceptable, but I do not appreciate 40 year old strangers doing dance floor groping. Luckily attention was paid to the *elbow move* or the crowd would have seen my left hook. But don't get me wrong! Despite all the crappiness, it was still kinda fun! Skank spotting always is! And I learnt a new drinking game - kinda like musical chairs.

And now tonight I'm just resting at home after a nice night/morning sleeping in and dinner with the family. Toodles!

What obsolete skill are you?

You are 'Gregg shorthand'. Originally designed to enable people to write faster, it is also very useful for writing things which one does not want other people to read, inasmuch as almost no one knows shorthand any more. You know how important it is to do things efficiently and on time. You also value your privacy, and (unlike some people) you do not pretend to be friends with just everyone; that would be ridiculous. When you do make friends, you take them seriously, and faithfully keep what they confide in you to yourself. Unfortunately, the work which you do (which is very important, of course) sometimes keeps you away from social activities, and you are often lonely. Your problem is that Gregg shorthand has been obsolete for a long time.

ups and downs

Well my return to the lab went off with a burst of excitement! I had to collect the eyes of two rats....but man, I felt so out of practice! As much as I prefer to use the dissecting microscope because you can see what you're doing more clearly, it showed up how shaky my hands are and how badly I was dissecting the eyes :( Overall, it went off without too much of a hitch which leads me to where I am now.

Now I'm just sitting at my desk, reading the online newspaper rather than doing any journal reading. *sigh* Lets hope I pick up in the rest of the week, esp since I no longer have to wake up to watch the World Cup. THAT WAS NOT A PENALTY!!!!

Holidays are great things. I've just finished a 4-day break where I visited my sister in another city. Quite fun and also educational! I've discovered which wines I like and why! This can only make my boozing better ;)

I'll post stuff when my sis emails me the photos.

Stories from the Lab

This story doesn't actually come from my lab - it was done in another lab within the department. Someone made a piece of metal touch a plug that was half hanging out of the wall...nearly blew their lab up. Luckily someone who knew their stuff managed to stop it before the sparks lit something. Here's the photographic evidence of what's left of the plug.
I'll leave this clue....zui hao pengyou!

Crimes against fashion

Number 25673 - Accessorising to match your outfit is good, but its downright weird if your whole outfit matches. Especially when your outfit comprises completely of black and purple viscose and velvet.

Number 4 - I like to call this the Reverse Skunk. If your hair is naturally very dark, DO NOT bleach your hair blonde unless you're going to maintain it.

Movie Review - Caché (Hidden)

If there's one thing you can say about Caché (Hidden) by Michael Haneke, it's that it is unsettling. Georges Laurent (Daniel Auteil) and his wife, Anne (Juliette Binoche), are an ordinary successful bourgeois couple. He hosts a literary discussion show on French television, she works for a publishing house. They have a 12 year old son and a nice house in Paris. One day, Anne comes home to find a videocassette on their porch, a two-hour long video that only contains a shot of the front door of their house, filmed by a hidden camera. The menace level slowly increases as Georges realises that the videos may be retribution for he did as a child...or is it? There's not really much I can say about the plot without giving too much away. It's very psychologically tense - I walked out totally exhausted! The pertinent information as to what's going on are slowly drawn out, and even then some things are thrown in the end that just screw everything around! There are few scenes of violence in Caché, but when it is used....wooh! Some people in the cinema gasped aloud - I know I did!

With two of the biggest *Big Name* actors of French cinema, of course you're gonna get powerhouse acting, and we're not disappointed. Auteil's portrayal of Georges runs the whole gamut of situations - the confident and capable public person slowly disintegrating from the stress of his guilt who refuses to face the past and making the same mistakes. Juliette Binoche (truly one of the most bee-yoo-tee-ful women in the world) is the wife who is bewildered at being terrorised for reasons she doesn't understand and furious that her partner knows but won't share. Every actor in Caché, take a bow.

Other than the acting, the feeling of fear and menace is also built up using sound and visuals. Unlike other movies, and perhaps more like real life, there is no background music. All backing sounds are what you'd get everyday - the closing of a door, footsteps, the sound of birds...these sounds are so ordinary but they are transformed in the context of what's going on. While Anne and Georges are going about their ordinary lives, there's someone watching them and unlike many Hollywood movies that use that *BAM!* music to reinforce that fear and warn you when it's coming. We and the Laurents arent given that luxury. The visuals are used to make us unsure of what we're watching - just like the Laurents. The opening shot is particularly clever. We see a house on the street, with the occasional person going past....which is then revealed to be the video that the Laurents received. Likewise, the ending shot which has the credits rolling over it is of their son's school - similar to a scene we saw earlier...or is it? The whole audience sat through the credits watching it....what did it mean?!!??! Why has Haneke chosen to show me this?!?!?! EEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!!

While the movie was incredibly tense, I do have some criticisms with the pacing. There were moments when it just felt that the suspense was dragged on for too long. I wanted to know what Georges' secret was....just goddamn tell me! Likewise, the lack of soundtrack accentuated when nothing was happening and made the whole dragging thing more obvious (to me). One major problem for me was the subtitle format. Ok, I can understand French quite well, but it's all over my head when people are talking in fast, tense sentences. Given that ppl who probably can't speak French are also in the audience, who was the genius who decided to put the subtitles in white?! Some of the time you couldn't read what they were saying!!!

If you want a movie that will give you the creeps and keep you thinking for ages, then this is it! But careful, it is heavy going. There's so much I'd like to say - about who did what and why...but that'd be giving bits away. *sigh*

headachey

This is not a good sign. I'm finding my tolerance for using the con-focal microscope is diminishing each time I use it :(. Today I was only on it for 1.5 hours when I pretty much had to stop cos my head was hurting like all get out! I've popped some ibuprofen, so hopefully it will be gone and I can go to the gym soon.

Omg...I was going to post a photo here, but I just found out that they weren't saved in colour *groan*. God, I'm gonna have to photograph them again!!!

In other news, Lydia finished her exams yesterday, so to celebrate we went and saw a movie for tight-ass Monday. It was supposed to be something non-intellectually taxing....but we ended up seeing Michael Haneke's Hidden (
Caché) instead. Its a very good movie, but will require some thought before I can review it.

Anyway, here's a photo of Shippo from the Inu Yasha anime. I just thought it was a cute pic.

Memorable songs, crappy movies

Today I discovered Three Men and a Little Lady was on TV and I made my brother change the channel from the footy so I could watch it. It's alright, you can laugh all you want. The movie is a sickly-sweet follow up to the original blockbuster and features the last hurrahs of Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Gutenberg in their 80s-glory, and Nancy Travis with a bad English accent. But I persevered and was finally rewarded with that song over the end and the closing credits - Waiting for a Star to Fall by Boy Meets Girl. *sigh* Such a cutesy song that brings me to many early 90s memories. This then got me thinking about movies that are horrendously crap but live on in some song that came from their awesome soundtracks, and came up with the list below:

I Will Always Love You & I Have Nothing - The Bodyguard
Everything I Do, I Do It For You - Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves (wooh, there's a shocking movie!)
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Mannequin
Fame - Fame
Into the Groove - Desperately Seeking Susan

Man, compiling this list was a lot harder than I thought it would be! Feel free to suggest any of your own.

World Cup report

What can I say about the FIFA World Cup? This may sound horribly unpatriotic of me, but as much as I cheered and smiled when my country won, I can't seem to make myself really, really, REALLY support them. When I watch them play and then compare them to a silky team like Brazil or Spain...I can't help but hope that we're not the team who gets killed 8-0, because you know there's a team who is killed every tournament.

I also hate the way the games dont start here until 11:30pm - it means I feel like !@$#% when i crawl into the lab after only a few hours sleep.

What else do I hate about it? Well, I hate how tense watching the games make me. I mean, on one hand its good because I'm really into it! But I also
hate it because they stress me out bigtime. Watching England v. Paraguay with my Mum...every approach, every missed shot, it was like being stabbed with swords of frustration and fear!

Good things about the World Cup! Well, apart from the fact the men are hot (although some of them tend to be quite ugly - e.g. Ronaldinho, Wayne Rooney), I love the outpouring of manlove in their post goal/match celebrations such as in the photo below:There's nothing quite like playing *stacks on* to show enthusiasm, something the Italians have in abundance. And the Dutch as well - such a romantic embrace...

And of course, I find a lot of amusement in the antics of the fans. All that make up, costumes etc...but what I really enjoy are the chants! Hundreds of ppl chanting the same thing simultaneously. They're often quite funny in a biting way that can double as social commentary! Like the way the Australians chanted *You only sing when you're whaling* to the Japanese after their 3-1 win. Hilarious!

So that's my round-up for now. So much sport this year....

Recipe for Joy

Mmmmm! Doncha just love public holidays? Other than sleeping, I spent the day doing something I like to do best - fiddle with recipes. I've described doing experiments as akin to cooking - you follow the directions you're given, and if you don't like the result, you keep fiddling with it until you get something you like. I was gonna try the macadamia shortbread again, but discovered that the kitchen was plain flour-free. I ended up helping my Dad bake a cake (cos he enjoys cooking too) and then I received a request from my Mum to make honey joys.

(You guys probably don't realise what a momentous thing that is - my Mum almost never eats anything I cook. Pretty much the only things that she'll eat are my chicken and corn soup, pasta bake, and shortbread. Even then she complains that my shortbread is too fattening.)

And so following this recipe, I made 24 joys:

90g butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 tbs honey
4 cups cornflakes
+ the secret ingredient (LOVE :P)

Melt the butter, sugar and honey in a saucepan until all the sugar has dissolved and its nice and frothy.
Pout the mixture over the cornflakes in a mixing bowl and mix it in good.
Divide them up into little patty-pans and bake them at 150
ºC for about 5-10 minutes (it depends if you prefer them hard or slightly sticky, less time for sticky).

It's best to store them in an air-tight container if you're not intending to eat them quickly. I ate about five in one sitting once and it felt like my teeth were gonna fall out, so I don't recommend overeating. Happy joying!

When authors' lives get in the way of a good story

I used to really love the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It featured a really kickass heroine (Anita Blake) who worked as a professional necromancer and also hunted vampires (natch). She was smart, small, had a lot of knowledge about supernatural beings, extremely gutsy, and owned an arsenal of weapons and was proficient in martial arts. The dry humour didn't hurt either. And one of the bonuses of he series was the extremely sexy male cast starring the Jean-Claude, the Vampire Master of the City. The sexual tension between them - whoo! - and then there was the introduction of Richard, the leader of the Werewold group which led to the development of a love triangle.

Everything was awesome and I looked forward to when my reservation at the library was filled.

But then something happened.

Although I was firmly in the Jean-Claude/Vampires rock! group, I found myself hating Richard as he developed into a hypocritical whiney asshole. He just brought the whole series down as far as I cared...but then something even worse happened. While I was cursing Richard for his dumb behaviour putting his Pack in danger, Anita began acquiring a lot of different powers, which initially was damn cool...but then she also turned into the woman that EVERYONE wanted to #@%! and it was like the series turned into the adventures of a woman who was extremely obliging to all those guys if they weren't evil, culminating the in the arrival of the were-leopard Micah of the giant genitalia (trust me on this - if you read the book, Anita always talks about them). Then things got a whole lot more explicit featuring things like group-sex, sadomasochism, and...er...changing during sex and while the books got exponentially thicker, this was mostly (imo) due to the increased amount of action Anita was getting as opposed to her doing any supernatural hunting.

I kept reading and cursing at the same time and then I found out something that explained the way the series turned. The character of Richard was based on Hamilton's husband...who then became her ex-husband, hence the u-turn in his characterisation. At the same time, Micah is based on her current husband...and all those declarations on how much Anita loved Micah and his gear is merely her celebration of their life together. I don't even want to think about what the symbolism of the sudden increase in kinky sex means. Hamilton defends the changes in the series being her way of challenging the expectations female-written subject matter. I suppose this is a valid argument, but since she's chosen to ruin what was essentially a series that already was challenging convention by featuring a woman who utilised violence in her day-to-day life and didn't whine about it, I can't help but roll my eyes.

Good luck to you, Ms. Hamilton. If I really wanted to read about kinky sex I'd pick up The Story of O or Anne Rice's Beauty series. For books about vampires and werewolves I'm gonna look somewhere else.

Oxygen thief #1

Holy crap. Even though the numerous gossip sites I visit showed evidence to the contrary, I had always kinda believed that Paris Hilton's threats to release an album were just that - threats. If you have several minutes of your life that you dont want back, you can watch the video for her song below....

This has struck me dumb. Having gracefully declined a copy of her pron tape, I imagine that it must have been something like this. After all, its pretty much just her posing and writhing around without many clothes on. But like a car crash, I just couldn't stop watching. As a comment on the song and her *cough* singing, she sounds a bit like Gwen Stefani doing Blondie's The Tide is High...but goddammit, that's such an insult to them I retract that statement.

This just goes to show that money can not buy class or talent.

Ready for more data?!

Sorry if it seems it's been a while since I wrote anything non-work related. I just seem to be doing a lot of stuff at uni and/or drinking with ppl from uni. Hopefully I will soon see Xmen 3 and get to reviewing again...but maybe not. Although having said that, I'm considering whether I should write a review of The Da Vinci Code book. Oooh, there's gonna be some controversial comments right there!!!

Anyway, here's some more of my photography that no one understands and puts me firmly in the *geek!* category. This photo here (400x mag, oil) was an attempt to replicate some images published by Hughes and Chan-Ling (IOVS 2004, 45, 2795-2806 for those who want to check it out). It shows the expression of desmin, a protein present in cells that come from a smooth muscle background. In the retina, desmin is only present in pericytes, a cell that lines blood vessels. I've lost some of the detail in the compression, but I think you can still tell where the cell nuclei are supposted to be (its the blank-ish round bits!). I dunno about this though - while desmin shows up the cells well, I'm thinking I might have to try labelling for something like occludin which should show me where the individual cells are. Yeah? Yeah? Meh, you guys don't care anyway :P

wow!

I was in the gym today and I saw the most impressive thing EVER. There was this guy on the stair-machine....reading a broadsheet newspaper.

I still cant figure out how he managed to do it without everything just going to hell. I wish I had a camera there with me to get photographic evidence!

motivation

I'm finding it harder to make myself do absolutely more than I have to do. Right now, I should be writing another app for another scholarship...its due in less than a month.....but I cant seem to make myself do it.

And this mood seems to be contagious - no one else in the room (except the one who is writing up) is doing any work. We're all just sitting here...doing nothing. Well that's not quite true, we were sitting here talking about doing nothing. But now my fellow procrastinators have gone downstairs to kill time and find someone.

Gee...I'm only 3 months in as well :S

Bad Dream :(

Wooh! I had a dilly of a pickly bad one last night! After a night of partying (again), I went to sleep at around 2-something (again). And I dont remember the earlier part of the dream now, but it ended with me alone in a run-down cottage where the doors were like...flyscreen doors. You know, not very secure. It was daytime, one of those bright summer days, but then a bunch of people I didn't know turned up at the place and knocked on the door. I went to the door, but then a gun came through a hole in the door and they shot me in the foot! So in panic I ran away from the door (natch), but they came into the house. I ran to the kitchen, pulled a gun from my handbag (no idea where that came from), waited until I saw the person who shot me, and shot them in the back! And it was a good shot too, hit them right above their left lung. But it turned out the ppl who broke into the house were teenagers and they shot me with a cap gun - bleeding but not incapacitated. Meanwhile the kid that I shot died.

And at that point I woke up and it was 5:30am.
So....any analysis?

The Hammer, The Spark, The Window

A bit of a change of pace in this entry. Those who know me and know me well know that I'm not single through lack of offers (there are some who go bar hopping with me know that no night is complete without some older guy hitting on me - Hi Mandy! :P). I am instead single through inclination. Part of this is no doubt due to my desire for *The Hammer*, as QQ calls it.

As much as I would like hammering (get your minds out of the gutter), I'm pragmatic enough to realise that it probably doesn't exist, and if it does then its not common so I will settle for *The Spark*. Although sparking still isnt quite common for me I think it did happen not so long ago, and so active person that I am, I took a chance on it. Due to things outside my control, the follow up to the sparking was delayed by a fair amount of time, during which I came to forget what it was that fuelled the spark in the first place. And while the eventual meeting was pleasant, the sparkage was decreased.

This then brings me to *The Window*. For sparkage to be truly successful, there is probably a limited amount of time for which to follow up. Windowing is a problem because you never know how long the spark stays alive. This is a pity because the window might be stopping the spark from turning into a hammer.

Get your mind around that last bit? Good!

Wow!

This is just for ppl who like to hear when I do stupid things, or the ppl who should be studying for exams, rather than reading my blog (Hi Lydia!)

After gym today, I took a shower with my glasses on. Yep, that's right on par with the time I did this.

Ok, I'm out for today!

There was a song I liked...

but there was a lyric in it that I couldn't figure out.

Well today, I figured it out and it has completely destroyed my enjoyment of the song because the singer has completely mispronounced the word in question.

Say it with me, the correct pronounciation of hyperbole is *hi-PER-boll-ee*, not hyper-bowl.

Can anyone guess the identity of the song?

The answer is right here (for the cheats): *These Words* by Natasha Bedingfield

Loyalty vs. Self Preservation

The person who got me thinking on this knows who he is. Hope you're working it out, but I've been pondering this situation for a few days now...and honestly, I can't come up with an answer that satisfies my need to express an opinion.

On one hand, you've got a gut instinct to stay with the ones who have supported you and support them back. On the other, if you realise that the ppl you're supporting are the ones who may bring you to you down, you're also driven by the need to minimise your chances of danger.

However, you'd think the ppl who've supported you would protect you, right? But what if the group can't see their own frailties?

But surely being on your own without your backup is more dangerous than a group who cant recognise their own flaws, if you see them, you can protect the group. One person can't protect a whole group.

Being in a group you know is better than being with a group who doesn't know you and don't have the wealth of knowledge about your own strengths and weaknesses. The new group may have better strengths and therefore have a greater likelihood of ensuring your survival.

You risk creating a danger that knows your weaknesses because they know you well. Vice-versa also applies.

Ok somewhere along the line I started thinking in pack mentality so it might sound more like a life or death situation than your own dilemma....anyway...I guess this entry really does have no point!

Eduardo Noriega

This post actually stems from a movie that I watched on tv a few weeks back. I decided to have a Saturday night home alone for dvds and other restful things. I can't remember what I was watching - probably Buffy or the like - but after I had enough of it, I switched on the telly and there was a French movie on. At the time, I couldn't figure out what it was really about because there was a lot of moving forwards and backwards in time, actors who were being called by different names (i.e. I couldn't get a hold on characters), and this fellow on the right doing a lot of running around in the nude.

Naturally, I had to keep watching (:P) and received no further enlightenment as to the plot although my perseverence was rewarded with more nudity (and in one case, nude handstands). Afterwards, I consulted the tv guide and found out I'd been watching a movie called Novo (2002) and that this handsomely nude devil is the Spanish actor, Eduardo Noriega. He is perhaps best known in the english-speaking world as the actor who played the role of Tom Cruise's character in Abre los ojos (1997), re-made as Vanilla Sky. From here on, all I can say is that he is way, way, WAY hotter than Tom Cruise, and that here's to hoping is profile in this country goes up, up up!

Just a general hi-ho!

This had been a pretty bad week for me, experiments-wise. I've never had so many things fail on me before in my life!!! Here's the list

Monday am - Rat dies too fast from anaesthetic. I have difficulty popping the eyes due to its death, taking too long to do it so the retinas detach and are useless
Monday pm - Start S100b-594/EAAT4-488 flatmount

Tuesday am - Meetings all morning
Tuesday pm - Three hours on a confocal microscope garners only 7 photos
Wednesday am - Start immunos on vertical sections

Wednesday pm - The cryostat pulls my tissue out of the block
Thursday am - Finish immunos, but the coverslip smears all the sections, wasting 2 days work
Thursday pm - go to Path to cry, Veronika stains a slide with H&E for me that confirms what the immuno would have (below).
Friday am - Nearly lose the flatmount tissue that I started on Monday! Find it in a puddle on the table and although majorly squashed when mounted, it's ok. FM turns out to be stained beautifully.

Friday pm - where we are now....trying to decide if I should start up a new FM....unsquashed.

I'm really tempted to just stop right now on a high...but on the other hand, I wont have to worry about it much next week if i start it now....

I would also like to point out that I've added another blog to my links - my sister has decided to keep one to chronicle her adventures around Aus working as an optom. It seems that she's mostly using it to complain at the moment, though.

You'll find her at http://frankly-cross-eyed.blogspot.com/
Toodles!

Finally! Some results!

Bah, I've been working like a machine in the lab lately - if you've seen me in the last day and asked me how I was going, I probably told a story about what happens when you're too...er....*enthusiastic* when doling out anaesthetic to rats.

Anyway, I finally got the photography machine to spit some data out at me! It took three hours sitting in a hot dark room, but I FINALLY got some lovely photos! Here are some!

This photo shows a vertical section of cryo-frozen retina stained for S100beta, a protein involved in calcium homeostasis and is produced by glial cells in the CNS. This slide is showing the cell bodies and processes of astrocyte cells at the bottom of the pic, Muller cell bodies and processes in the centre, and the Inner Limiting Membrane formed by MC endfeet at the top.
(1:50000, 400x mag)

Hmm....lost a bit of the fine detail when I compressed this. This is a flatmounted whole retina labelled for EAAT-4, a glutamate transporter only expressed on astrocytes in the retina. So what the bright red things are are astrocyte processes. This doesnt look as nice as it does as a .tif file. (1:100, 630x mag)

So there's the proof that I don't really spend all day at uni on msn :P

Bon anniversaire, mon amie!

I'd just like to give a birthday shout-out to Carmencita for yesterday - awesome party! I just hope you didn't have too much trouble cleaning up :S. I remember looking at the bomb-site that was your kitchen and saying to Sarah, "Gosh....your poor Mum...."

And on that same note, I'd also like to acknowledge Amandine's (left) and Miss Pooky's (right) recognition of my own upcoming commemoration!

Open Letter

To Pink jacket/Green cargo pants on the 8:15am from Alphington,

I don't know who you think you are, but that was a really packed train around you. I mean sure, its not everyday that a primary school decides to take their students for an excursion to Richmond, but that train still regularly has people crowding around the doorways for lack of seats. This then brings up my issue with you - why did you feel your bag was more worthy of a seat than any of your fellow commuters? This is not a personal complaint - I managed to get a seat for myself and my 2 bags, so it was not as if I was standing there for the entire trip flashing you dirty looks. However, out of consideration for everyone else, I carried by bags on my lap. On the other hand, you saw fit to put your bag on a seat and spend the trip completing some personal grooming (it didn't work). I guess this means you were not paying attention to the rules that govern public transport behaviour, in fact, are you one of those people who stand on the *walking* side of the escalator or block the exits on trams? I had considered breaking out of my morning torpor to take your bag's seat and free up my former seat for other people, but then I remembered karma. Karmic retribution is not mine to deal out; one day the cosmos will visit this situation back and here's to hoping you will learn.

Regards,
Trench coat and Burberry.

Optical illusions

I don't know about everyone else, but I love a good optical illusion! It's probably got something to do with the way your senses tell you one thing that's incompatible with logic - geek! And one of the best-known artists who created optical illusions was Escher. Now Lego have paid homage to Escher with this great creation :

Awesome!

The original site for this was http://www.andrewlipson.com/lego.htm which has plenty of lego fun! Man, they make me feel so ordinary in comparison - I always just tried to make a house.
For more cool illusions, see this blog. I especially like the sand sculptures!

mmmmm.....

I'll have to re-organise my desk at uni now. Instead of having articles just piled all over the place I'm going to have to designate journal vs computer areas.

Who knows? Maybe I'll become neat.

NAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And here's a shout out to Sampson, whom I visited yesterday. Thanks for all the anime and the whole season one of Supernatural. I'll make sure they get a good viewing :P

I am truly retarded

How depressing. This is a thanks to everyone who helped/is helping me set Mally-toshi (my laptop) to the settings that will please me most. Really. If I had to do it myself, I'd probably be curled up on the floor whimpering at how to do it. Even what is the seemingly most simple thing... I can't do it! For example, given the choice between Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 1.5 (British)....whats the difference?!?! In the end I was told non-British was the way to go even though there is apparently little difference between the two *sigh*.

So I'd just like to thank the following ppl in no particular order:

Luthersmee
Roy
Ez
Martina
Yetapee
Justin
and Pooey.

There are probably more ppl than this list has and it will prob also expand...exponentially.

I did some photography today...

so I thought I'd have some photos of rat retina to post. But it turns out that due to my computer retardedness I dont have them!

In other news, I bought myself a laptop! Gee...here's to more retarded action!

Hey!

Recalling yesterday's haiku post...

Sex on the brain: it's on the nose
By Ian Sample, LondonMay 10, 2006

Sex pheromones, the chemicals some scientists believe waft off the body to help attract sexual partners, are processed differently in the brain depending on our sexuality.
Scientists have found that a potent chemical lurking in male sweat causes a rush of electrical activity in the brains of straight women and gay men, while lesbians and straight men treat it like any other odour.
Ivanka Savic, a neuroscientist at the Stockholm Brain Institute who led the study, said the finding suggested that specific brain circuits were engaged when people were exposed to chemicals they found sexually stimulating. The scans did not reveal whether sexual behaviour was learned or hard-wired.
Three groups of 12 volunteers, including lesbians, heterosexual women and straight men, were asked to sniff a variety of odours. They included odourless air, four common scents and androstadienone, a chemical abundant in male sweat and suspected of acting as a male pheromone.

"Untitled"

(a haiku adventure in four parts - thanks to Ez for the title!)

Intersection lights
Rain falls on groups dressed in black
Heads lowered, they cross

One passes by me
My lone head raised and turned back
Following that scent

Anonymous man
Stranger makes my senses reel
Dark wool coated one

Teasing memory
Latrobe and Elizabeth
Makes me smile all day

Chai (tea blend)

When it comes to food, I can be equal parts adventurous (checking out new places!) but also a creature of habit (and ordering the same kind of food :P). The same applies when it comes to tea. Generally, I'm a English Breakfast or Genmaicha tea in the morning kinda gal, Earl Grey in the afternoon/night. But since my short little stint at the sushi shop last year, I have started drinking chai tea (not to be confused with chai latte - afro guy at Baretto, I'm looking at you!).

I'm not sure what chai tea is made from (I assume there are some actual tea leaves in there), but what makes it different is that spices have been added to the tea which then produces a distinctive scent and flavour - kinda like the way bergamot makes Earl Grey Earl Grey. I'm not exactly certain of the combination of spices though. The ones I can pick out are cinnamon and cloves...according to wikipedia other common additions are star anise, pepper, ginger and cardamon. I prefer it with soy milk rather than cow milk and sugar although I started off drinking it with honey.

While unlikely to knock off the others as my faves, try chai at least once. Even if you decide you don't like the flavour (some ppl have said it's kinda weird), the happy scents will make it worth it!

S-Hun zodiac

Ppl at uni have been raving that this is the most accurate one ever...so I'm just gonna post my one for the week. Ppl who know me and the goings on in my life...tell me if you think it's true!

"A focus on work. You concentrate on getting things done and establishing yourself as an expert in some area. You look at work which is different because it presents a challenge. There is talk of health; yours or a workmate's. Either way it'll be a tough week. Some Geminis get a new puppy to chew up slippers or a kitten to spot the carpet. There is little happening in your intimate relationships. You try to make things happen but th etime is not right. choose the right moment and things fall into place."

Let's reconvene next week to see how accurate it is!

Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger

From their absolutely awesome second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, Oasis presented the world with one of the best rock (and group karaoke) songs ever, Don't Look Back In Anger. The song is notable for being the first song sung by Noel Gallagher rather than the usual lead vocalist, his brother Liam, and references John Lennon by using the opening chords from Imagine, and the lyrics "trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head" apparently quotes Lennon.

It is equal parts melancholic and uplifting - the chorus being especially catchy with long notes that aren't particularly challenging to sing. I'm not going to do an in depth analysis of what the song means, its key, etc., because I know that all you need to do is hear it to know what I'm talking about when I say that it's fantastic. It's a great song to be drunkenly sway along to, preferably arms linked with other ppl, and sung at the top of your lungs. I'm going to karaoke this coming Friday and I fully intend on singing it!!!

blogger's block

It's not that I have nothing to talk about. It's just that once I reach a certain point in writing it (like, end of the first sentence), I'm finding I have nothing else to say. It's like the topics that I want to talk about have decreased exponentially.

Is it possible that 2 months of PhD have already caused my arts-induced verbosity to decrease?! If so, that's a shocking state of affairs. And I still can't seem to get around to writing that Matrix movie/dvd review. I think I'll have to consign it to the bin and give it up as a lost cause, like finding a sequel to Pride and Prejudice that would satisfy all the fans - it is never going to happen.

In entertainment news, it looks like a lot of big dumb movies will be coming out in the next two months. Mission: Impossible 3 (ugh, now there's going to be a dumbass movie), X-Men 3 (actually, I might see this one), Da Vinci Code (if you know me in real life, you probably know my feelings about the book)...it's quite depressing.

If anyone wants to email me a topic I should cover, feel free!

Egg meals

(Due to my own ineptitude, I am writing this at uni. Alas, there will be no mouth watering photos).

I think it's saying something that when writing her guide on cooking basics, Delia Smith's very first chapter was on how to cook eggs. Sure, you may snort and say *gor, how hard can it be to cook an egg?* but as I have met some people who say they can't boil or fry eggs, you realise the greatness of what eggs are. They can be the simplest of meals (for example, medium-boiled eggs with soldiers) or awesome wonders like crême brulée. One of my favourite meals as a child and as an adult is a fried egg on toast with cracked pepper and soy sauce. The egg is preferably fried with a lot of oil in a very hot pan so that the white is fried quickly with the edges all crisp while the yolk is still runny. The sweetness of the yolk is then counteracted by the salty soy and the spicy pepper.

As I got older and my income and foodiness became more adventuresome, I discovered Eggs Benedict (for those who don't know, its a poached egg on ham on an english muffin covered in hollandaise sauce). Done well, Benedict can be a brilliant start to the day. Done badly and you'll be retching. My former favourite place to have it (former because it no longer exists) was a little cafe on Swanston St. called Ruby/Orange. If I had a day where classes didn't start too early or during swot vac, I'd go make myself feel better by having Benedict and sit around feeling warm inside. Variations of Eggs Benedict are Eggs Florentine (substitute spinach for ham), Eggs Fairfax (smoked salmon for ham), or having hash browns instead of (or with) the muffin.

Sometimes you may look at an egg and think about how troublesome it is - the tricky shell, the fact it might be rotten, cholesterol, the sulphur...but you know, I think they're worth it!

(And no, the Egg Board is not paying me to promote them. They should!)

Opinions

You know, sometimes I think I should make this blog more topical. I feel that I should discuss things such as the rise of fundamentalism and absolutist policies in the world and its implications. As a scientist, I should analyse the debate between Creationism/Intelligent Design and Evolution. I should rail against the injustices present in the world. I should debate politics or discuss more abstract topics other than my thesis.

I started writing a piece on the apparent paradox that is the prejudice against Christianity in the mass media (other than Fox News), despite the fact that it seems the number of worshippers who identify themselves as Christian are increasing - you know, something juicy to get people worked up. But then I started feeling depressed about all the dividing lines that put someone as either *this* or *that*. Seriously everyone, what people are or aren't shouldn't be the issue, its what they do and why they do it. To quote that absolute fount of wisdom, Homer Simpson, "Let's stop the fussin' and the feudin' and get down to the lovin'." Perhaps this is overly simplistic, but I did do a personality test that said I was a *dynamic visionary*. People, follow my lead!

Really, the world is a great place and life is beautiful. Enjoy it.
Next entry, I will talk about the wonder and simplicity that are eggs and how great egg-based meals are.
